Wood Material Buyer
Location: Houston, Texas
Salary: $60,000.00+ DOE
The Wood Material Buyer oversees the process of purchasing wood products and work closely with their purchasing team to reduce material costs. Source and interview vendors. Negotiate contracts and vendor agreements. Inspect materials for grade compliance with specifications. Ensure vendors are held accountable for defective material. Travel may be occasionally required. 2-5 years minimum experience with hardwood lumber and plywood grading is a must.

About the Job
Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze and manage the wood material supply base
- Evaluate wood market trends and delivery systems
- Communicate with manufacturing to ensure precise procurement of materials such as Hardwood Lumber, Plywood, Particle Board, MDF, etc.
- Research and compare wood material suppliers, goods, and services
- Develop and maintain relationships with wood material suppliers
- Report vendor performance and costs to management
- Source and interview vendors
- Negotiate contracts and vendor agreements
- Negotiate for the best costs for materials and products meeting our specifications
- Select reliable suppliers in terms of product quality, cost-efficiency, and reliability
- Communicate with vendors, clients, customers, team members, and managers to align goals
- Ensure vendors are held accountable for defective material
- Inspect materials for grade compliance with specifications
- Travel to suppliers for process and material review, both in-state, out-of-state, and internationally
- Track and record orders
- Receive and document order arrivals
- Propose and implement new processes or systems for improvement
- Recommend new products or specifications for improvement
- Monitor inventory levels and determine procurement needs for timely organization and scheduling
- Operate equipment while adhering to safety procedures
- Adhere to a scorecard measurement system for tracking values
About you
Qualifications & Professional attributes
- High school diploma/GED as a minimum educational requirement
- Proficiency in hardwood lumber and plywood grading
- 2-5 years of prior experience in procurement, purchasing, or as a material buyer
- 2-5 years of experience in the hardwood lumber and plywood industry
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Outstanding organizational and documentation skills
- Proficiency in research and analysis
- Physical capability to stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 25-30 pounds
- Effective multitasking, prioritization, and time management abilities
